Preparing for Your Fall Family Photo Session

Fall is a magical time for family photos, with its vibrant colors, crisp air, and cozy atmosphere. To make sure your session is as smooth and stress-free as possible, a little preparation goes a long way. As your photographer, I’m here to guide you, and these tips will help you and your family look and feel your best, ensuring we capture those precious autumn memories perfectly.

1. Wardrobe Wonders: Styling for Success

Choosing outfits can be the most daunting part, but it doesn’t have to be! The key to a cohesive and beautiful fall family portrait is to think about color palettes and comfort.

  • Embrace Fall Colors: Think warm, rich tones like mustard yellow, burnt orange, deep red, forest green, navy blue, cream, and various shades of brown and grey. These colors complement the natural autumn scenery beautifully.
  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Instead of everyone wearing identical outfits, aim for complementary colors and styles. For example, if one person wears a plaid shirt, another could wear a solid color from that plaid.
  • Layer Up! Fall weather can be unpredictable. Layers not only add visual interest to your photos but also keep you comfortable. Think cardigans, vests, jackets, and scarves.
  • Comfort is Key: Happy kids (and adults!) make for the best photos. Ensure everyone’s outfits are comfortable and allow for movement. Avoid anything too tight, scratchy, or that needs constant adjusting.
  • Textures Add Dimension: Incorporate different textures like knit sweaters, corduroy, denim, and even some subtle patterns.
  • Footwear Matters: Depending on our location, we might be walking in grass or uneven terrain. Choose practical yet stylish shoes like boots, closed-toe flats, or dressier sneakers.
  • Avoid: Large logos, neon colors, and busy patterns that can distract from your faces.

Here’s an example of a beautifully coordinated fall family wardrobe:

2. Location, Location, Location: Setting the Scene

We’ve discussed possible locations, but think about how the setting will influence your session.

  • Natural Beauty: Fall foliage provides a stunning natural backdrop. Whether it’s a park, a forest, or an open field with colorful trees, the environment adds so much to your photos.
  • Embrace the Light: We’ll schedule your session during the “golden hour” – the hour after sunrise or before sunset – for the most flattering, warm light.
  • Comfort and Familiarity: If you have young children, consider a location that offers some space for them to explore and feel comfortable.

3. Pamper Yourselves: Hair, Makeup & Grooming

A little extra self-care can make a big difference in how confident you feel in front of the camera.

  • Hair Care: Aim for a style that holds up well outdoors. Consider getting a trim a week or two before your session. For a natural look, avoid drastically new hairstyles right before your photos.
  • Makeup (Optional but Recommended): A little extra makeup than your everyday look can help define your features in photos. Focus on an even complexion, defined eyes, and a natural lip color. If you’re considering professional makeup, book it in advance!
  • Manicures/Pedicures: Your hands and feet might be visible in some shots, especially if we’re doing close-ups or shots with children.
  • Grooming for Everyone: Ensure everyone’s hair is neat, and clothes are ironed. Don’t forget to clean under fingernails, especially for kids!

4. Pack Your Bag: Essentials for the Day

Be prepared for anything with a small bag of essentials.

  • Snacks & Drinks: Especially important for kids! Opt for non-messy snacks like crackers, fruit snacks, or pretzels. Avoid anything that stains easily.
  • Water: Stay hydrated!
  • Comfort Items for Kids: A favorite small toy or blanket can sometimes provide comfort or a good distraction.
  • Touch-Up Kit: Lip gloss, powder, a brush or comb, and any personal items you might need.
  • Wet Wipes/Tissues: For unexpected messes or runny noses.
  • Change of Clothes (Optional): Especially useful for young children in case of accidents or spills.

5. Mindset Matters: Relax and Have Fun!

This is perhaps the most important tip!

  • Talk to Your Kids: Explain what’s going to happen in a positive and exciting way. Let them know it’s a fun outing where they get to spend time with family.
  • Don’t Stress About Perfection: My goal is to capture genuine moments and emotions. Don’t worry if your kids aren’t perfectly still or smiling at the camera every second. Sometimes the best photos are the candid, unposed ones.
  • Trust Your Photographer: I’m experienced in working with families and will guide you through the process. Relax, be yourselves, and enjoy the experience!
